The direction is the initial great-circle bearing from your latitude and longitude to the Kaaba at 21.422487° N, 39.826206° E. Pick a city or use this device’s location. Both stay in the browser. The compass uses device-orientation events when the browser allows them, including a permission prompt on some phones. A desktop browser often has no compass, and the arrow then shows the bearing clockwise from north. A local mosque can still differ by a small angle. This is not a religious ruling.
